Competitive Grace, who refuses to give an inch.
Mischievous Grace, who likes to cause as much trouble as possible.
Conflicted Grace, who doesn’t know what she wants or why she wants it.
I’m used to those Graces, will take any one of them anytime. But this…this is Sad Grace, and I don’t know how to deal with her at all. I definitely don’t know how to make her better.
But surely leaving her to stew in her own sadness isn’t the way. Not this time.
So instead of walking away, I take my first unauthorized step over her ridiculous One Direction duct tape in months (except to grab the odd bottle of water) and sit down on the couch next to her. The fact that she doesn’t shove me away or tell me to get lost is the final clue that something really is wrong with her.
Which only leaves me with one thing I can do to try to help her. I slip inside her mind and sneak a peek at the memory that’s right at the forefront.
…
“I want to see the baby seals, Daddy! Let’s go see the babies!”
Young Grace—maybe six or seven—is strolling down a beachfront street in a frilly white dress with red polka dots all over it. She’s holding the hand of a man in his mid-thirties, who’s also dressed up.
“We can’t, Grace. They aren’t here this time of year.”
“What do you mean? They have their babies here, so they should live here.” Grace looks all upset and, for a second, I think she’s going to stomp her foot until her father takes her to see the seals.
But her dad just leans down and tickles her until she laughs, a joyous sound that fills up the whole memory and makes my chest tighten.
“Things don’t work like that,” he tells her after she finally stops giggling. “Everything has a season, and right now, it’s the season for them to be in their other home, where the water is warmer.”
“Because it’s winter and it’s going to be cold here soon?” Grace asks.
“Exactly. They don’t have a house where they can warm up like we do. So they need to go where the water is warm enough for them to be comfortable.”
Grace seems to think about that for a little while as the pair keeps walking, swinging their hands back and forth.
“When they come back, they’ll stay for a while?” she asks. “And have babies of their own?”
“They sure will,” her dad says.
