It’s the first thing she’s said to me that’s not a shout since she came out of the bathroom, so I don’t pretend not to hear her. At the same time, though, the answer’s pretty obvious, so I just shrug.

Then throw another ax.

This one slides right in between the other two. Direct bull’s-eye.

Grace watches with what looks like interest, but when I hold one out to her to throw, she shakes her head vigorously as she backs away.

“Just turn down the music, will you?”

She phrases it like a question, but it’s not a request. Which leaves me with only one thing to do. I walk back to the stereo and turn the music up, just as The Halo Effect’s “Shadowminds” starts to play.

It’s heavy on drums, heavy on bass, and absolutely obnoxious when played this loud. In other words, perfect for what I’m trying to accomplish.

Grace is so angry now that she can barely speak, which is fine by me. About time she joined the club.

She storms over to the kitchen, and I pretend not to watch as she grabs a bottle of water from the fridge. But it’s hard to play innocent when she opens one of the cupboards and pulls out a box of those Pop-Tart things she likes so much.

An empty box.

What can I say? I used my time wisely while she was in the bathroom.

I throw another ax, but I don’t have a clue if it hits or not. I’m too busy watching her out of the corner of my eye.

She looks confused, but not upset—or should I say not any more upset than she originally was—as she tosses the cardboard box into the recycling bin. But when she reaches for another box, one that is sealed on top, and opens it to also find no Pop-Tarts, she slams it down on the counter and looks at me with narrowed eyes.

In response, I calmly walk to the target to retrieve my axes, then set up to throw them again—all without so much as acknowledging she exists. But once she reaches into the cabinet a third time, I can’t help but watch as she opens yet another empty Pop-Tart box.

At that point, she doesn’t even bother to throw the box away. Instead, she slams it down on the kitchen counter with a primal shout before making a beeline straight toward me.

“What is your problem?” she yells, and this time she’s loud enough that there’s no pretending I don’t hear her over the music. Which…damn. The girl has one hell of a set of pipes on her.
