And, maybe most of all, I cry out of resignation, because never has it been more obvious that I’m not in Kansas anymore. This is my new life, and it’s always going to be my life.
I wouldn’t trade Jaxon or Macy for anything, but I’m so tired of not understanding how things work here. So tired of having more questions than answers. So tired of having to depend on other people to explain things to me that I never dreamed existed.
Like right now, there’s a part of me that wants nothing more than to march out there and ask Hudson how this whole thing is happening. He says I’ve locked us up in my head somehow—I have no clue how that’s possible, but after that flash to Coronado, I’m willing to believe it.
But why would I choose to wall us up in his lair of all places? Why not Katmere Academy? Or my old house in San Diego? Or pretty much anywhere else on earth? Why the hell would I pick this place, where he’s obviously got home-field advantage—and plans on taking full advantage of it?
Plus, if we are in my head, where did that dragon out there come from? I guarantee I’ve never thought anything like that up in my life. And if I somehow managed to create him, how the hell did he break that window? How did he burn Hudson, who should be safe in my mind?
None of it makes sense—at least not to me. Hudson seems to know what’s going on, but he’s way more familiar with this world and its rules than I ever will be.
Which is just another thing that sucks. I don’t trust this guy, at all. And now, here I am, stuck with him as pretty much my only source of information. And there’s no way to know when he’s telling the truth and when he’s telling one more giant lie. Not to mention, he’s not exactly been forthcoming with the information he does decide to give me.
Ugh. Can I just say fuck. My. Life.
Then again, I’m pretty sure it’s already fucked. And so am I.
I swipe a hand at the tears rolling down my cheeks, wipe them away. No matter how much I want to stay right here on this bathroom floor for the rest of the night—or eternity—I can’t. When I was growing up, my mom always had a rule about crying. She’d give me ten minutes to cry, sob, yell into a pillow, do whatever I had to do. Ten minutes to feel sorry for myself and whine about how terrible whatever I was going on about was. But when those ten minutes were up, I had to pick myself up and move on.
