When they do, I mutter, “I’m fine,” and step back another step. As I do, something flashes in her eyes, but my heart is racing and the blood is pounding in my ears and I’ve got no time to figure out what’s going on with her.

I’m too busy trying to figure out what the fuck is going on with me. With us.

Not that there is an us, I assure myself. And there’s nothing to freak out about here at all. Definitely no reason to have all these bizarre, unidentifiable emotions pouring through me. I just saw incontrovertible proof that the girl makes connections with everyone and everything. Just because one has apparently formed between us doesn’t mean anything.

It doesn’t mean that we’re going to be friends or anything like that. And it doesn’t mean that we’re going to be stuck here for a long time, either. It just means that at this very moment in this very space, there’s some kind of connection between us.

Which makes sense now that I think about it. After all, I am trapped in Grace’s head. It’d be weird if we weren’t linked somehow. And judging by how thin that string is, it will probably snap the second we actually figure out how to get the fuck out of here.

Relief flows through me at the realization, calms the too-fast beating of my heart and the chaotic tumble of my thoughts.

Just in time, actually, because judging from the look on Grace’s face, she’s had about enough of my freak-out. No offense, but she can join the fucking club there.

“Seriously, Hudson?” she demands, shoving the wild tumble of her hair out of her face in a way that’s rapidly becoming familiar to me. A way that means she’s preparing to go into battle. With me, of course, as that seems to be her favorite pastime. “Are you actually listening to anything that I’m saying?”

“Yeah, of course I am,” I tell her even as I go back over the last several minutes in my head.

“Oh yeah? What did I say, then?” She crosses her arms over her chest and narrows those big chocolate-brown eyes of hers at me as she waits for an answer.

And why the fuck am I noticing the color of her eyes anyway? And what she does with her hair? Neither of those things matters in the least, so why am I suddenly thinking about them?

I’m not, I assure myself as my heart starts to go crazy again. I’m just freaked out by what I saw. It’ll be fine.

It is fine. It absolutely is.
