“Grace?” The annoyance drains from his eyes, only to be replaced by an uncertainty that breaks my heart.
“I love you, Hudson. I love the way you make me smile and the way you’re grumpy when you first wake up. I love the way you always have a quick one-liner and how you’re always brutally honest, even with yourself. Even when it hurts.”
“Grace.” His voice breaks this time when he says my name and there are tears in his bright blue eyes. Or maybe there’s not—maybe the tears are in my eyes.
“I love how protective you are and how loyal you are and how you always accuse me of having a mean streak, but you’ve got one, too. I love how particular you are about your things and how annoyed you get when I mess with them, even though you usually don’t say anything. I love how pissy you sound when you do say something.”
“What are you doing?” he asks, and yeah. Those are definitely tears in his eyes, definitely tears running down the cheeks of this boy who hasn’t let himself cry in a century.
“Telling you that I love you, Hudson. The good parts and the bad. The parts you hide away because you don’t think anyone will ever love you if they know about them. I see those parts and I love you anyway. More, I love you because of them. And because of your good points. And because of all the things in between.
“I love you because you can pull a dozen birdcalls out of your ass at a moment’s notice. I love you because you let me sometimes cry and drip snot all over you and never complain even when you’re completely grossed out. I love you because you’ve always got my back and I love you because you let me have yours.
“I love you, Hudson Vega.” I take the box from him and lift the lid so he can see the bracelet inside. The bracelet made of giant chains knotted together at first glance, but they’re really hearts when you look more closely.
“‘Till the sun grows cold and the stars grow old,’” I whisper as I unclasp the bracelet and show him the engraving on the inside of the clasp. The same exact engraving that I now know is on the inside of my promise ring.
He looks shocked, even through the tears that are still falling. “How did you know?”
“I didn’t,” I tell him. “I just love you the same way you love me. I think I always have. I know I always will.”
“Grace.” This time when he says my name, it’s filled with everything he’s ever felt for me—everything he will ever feel for me. It’s messy and wonderful and in its own imperfect way, absolutely perfect.
