I’m crying now, just full-on sobbing as Hudson’s words wash over me. As they soothe part of my heart even as they make another part realize that I’ve really messed up. Not just in forgetting him—though we figure that was the ancient magic at work, not me—but because I’ve never given him the same reassurances that he’s given me. I’ve never let this brilliant, beautiful, wonderful man know that I love him the same way that he loves me.

Through anything.

Through everything.

Through eternity…no matter what.

And there seems no more perfect place to tell him than right here, in the home we’re making together. No more perfect time to tell him than right now, before we head back to the Shadow Realm where we had our first home together.

So I walk to my dresser and dig in the back of the bottom drawer where I’ve been hiding Hudson’s birthday present since I found it at an artisan fair several weeks ago. I pull out the small box and then hand it to him.

“What’s this?” he asks.

“An early birthday present,” I answer. But when he goes to lift the lid, a goofy smile on his lips, I stop him with a gentle hand.

“You know—” My voice cracks, and I have to stop and clear my throat. I take a deep breath and let it out slowly, willing the hummingbirds having a party in my stomach to calm the fuck down. This is Hudson, my Hudson, and there’s no need for me to be nervous with him of all people.

But I am. I really am, because it’s Hudson. The love of my life. And no one deserves a flawless declaration of love more than he does. I just don’t know if I’m going to be able to give it to him.

Not when tears are still streaming down my face and panic is beating wild wings inside my rib cage. And not when the perfect words are all jumbled in my head.

I take another breath, blow it out slowly, and try to fix them into something coherent. Something that will be as beautiful and as special as he is.

Except I can’t do it. I keep tripping over my tongue, tripping over my thoughts, and making a giant mess of this. The same way I’ve made a giant mess of so much in our relationship.

It’s amazing he loves me anyway.

But he does. He does love me, despite the mess.

And maybe that’s the point. To all of this.

Love isn’t always easy. And it isn’t always pretty. Sometimes it’s messy and painful and completely fucked up. But maybe that’s okay. Maybe love doesn’t have to be perfect.

Maybe it just has to be real.
