“There didn’t seem to be any point.” Hudson finally answers my question as I continue to examine my new ring. I look up to find him watching me and finally manage to tear my attention away from my new double promise ring.
“Shadow magic is the oldest magic in the world,” he continues. “It came before light, before time, before anything. And if it couldn’t stand up to us returning to Katmere, I figured what was the point. We’d never get back what we lost, so why burden you with it?”
“And yet you gave me a promise ring when we were in Giant City. You repeated the same words—the same promise to me there that you made me in the Shadow Realm.”
He nods. “I did. Yes.”
“But why?”
For the first time since I got my memories back, he looks confused. “Why what?”
“Why would you promise to love me again when you thought I would never love you back? Why make a promise with ancient magic that would bind you to me forever, even though you didn’t know if I would ever fall back in love with you?”
He laughs. He actually laughs—and continues laughing, despite the warning I know is in my narrowed eyes.
“Really?” I demand, hands on hips. “You think this is funny?”
“I think it’s funny that you have to ask,” he answers. “Grace, I’m already bound to you, and not just through the mating bond. When it broke, when we came back here and the Bloodletter’s ancient magic tore apart our bond and disrupted the shadow magic so that you and Jaxon would get back together… Do you actually think that made me stop loving you?”
“Well, no. But—”
“Nothing will ever make me stop loving you, Grace,” he tells me as he strokes a tender hand down my cheek. “Nothing will ever make me feel anything but bound to you forever. It’s nice to have the ring, and it’s nice to have the mating bond. It’s definitely nice to have the promise ring, since repeating the words triggered the shadow promise and somehow gave you back your memories. But I loved you without all of it once, and I’ll love you without all of it forever.”
“Oh, Hudson—” I start, but he stops me with a gentle finger pressed against my lips.
“Binding myself to you didn’t do anything except give a physical manifestation of what I already knew. I belong to you, Grace. Heart, soul, body. I have since before we left the lair the first time. I’ll be yours until the day I die, and if there’s some kind of afterlife, I’ll be yours then, too. Nothing will ever change that, so why wouldn’t I make a promise to you?”
