He rolls his eyes at me, but he doesn’t seem extra pleased when he reaches back in the drawer to straighten up the underwear that I had the nerve to touch.

“You know what else this means, don’t you?” I ask as I, too, start to get dressed.

“What?” he asks warily.

I nod toward his turntable. “Your vinyl collection—”

“Is still in order!” he crows as he races over to his stereo area and crouches down.

He spends the next fifteen minutes pulling the perfectly organized, perfectly alphabetized albums out with such glee that I can’t help but laugh along with him. At least until he settles on the vinyl edition of the soundtrack for The Greatest Showman.

Then I watch him with tears in my eyes as he skips to the song he told me was our song all those months ago. “Dance with me?” he asks, holding out a hand to me as the opening strains of “Rewrite the Stars” fill the lair.

And I know we need to talk about going back. I know we need to make a plan, because we can’t leave our friends and family worrying about us forever. Especially not when I know how to take us home again.

But as Hudson grins down at me, his un-gelled hair falling over his forehead, I decide it can all wait just a little while longer. Because there will never be a time when this guy—my guy—asks me to dance that I will ever say no to him.

So I take his hand. I let him sweep me into his arms. And while I prepare myself to be spun and twirled and dipped, it turns out this isn’t that kind of dance. Instead, it’s just him and me with our arms and bodies wrapped around each other as we move to the familiar music.

Hudson does dip me at the very end of the song, and as he pulls me up, I can see the fear in his eyes. Just like I know he can see the resolution in mine.

“It’s going to be okay,” I tell him.

“You don’t know that,” he answers. “You have no idea what all of that time magic hitting us did to you—or me.”

I grab his hand. “I know everything is going to be fine. How could things not be okay? With everything we’ve already gone through, everything that we’ve done and been to each other, how could going back do anything to ruin what we’ve got?”

“I don’t know,” he tells me as he blows out a long breath. “But I know that it’s not that simple.”

I try to hug him, to show him that I love him and that everything is going to work out, but he ducks out of the hug, paces several feet away.
