“I took a chance,” he tells me. “Shadow magic is among the oldest and strongest on the planet. I researched it in the library, then talked to Nyaz about what I’d learned. He told me it was forever. Completely unbreakable except—maybe—by a time dragon’s magic.”

He drops another kiss on my ring, then moves to press kisses along the length of my neck because he knows I love it. And also because I think he loves it, too.

“I took a chance,” he repeats. “That the shadow magic and our mating bond and the love I feel for you would be strong enough to survive anything.”

“Even a massive arrow of time magic,” I murmur as I take a turn kissing and licking and nibbling my way across the sharp line of his jaw.

“Even that,” he agrees.

And then he’s kissing me, really kissing me, and nothing has ever felt so good. Because we’re free and we’re us and somehow, despite all the odds, we made it through all of that together.

When Hudson’s finally done kissing me—and maybe doing some other stuff as well—I glance around for my phone and realize it did not make it back from the Shadow Realm with me.

“What day is it?” he asks, glancing at his watch.

At first, I don’t know what he’s asking, but then I realize we were here for more than a year. The time magic could have sent us back to any one of the days we’d been here or a day in the future for all we know.

It turns out that it’s March. We’ve been here for nearly four months, according to the regular timeline, which seems so strange, considering everything we’ve been through. And how long we’ve actually been together.

“Four months,” Hudson muses. “That’s not very long at all, is it?”

“It’s not,” I agree. And as I do, I can’t help thinking about what has probably happened at Katmere Academy during those four months. About how worried Macy and Uncle Finn and Jaxon probably still are about me. And how they are all probably blaming Hudson for this mess even though it’s really my fault.

“Hudson…” I broach the subject tentatively.

“Don’t,” he tells me as he rolls onto his back and covers his eyes with the back of his hand.

“I think we need to at least talk about it.”

“Yeah, well, I don’t.” He throws the covers back and climbs out of bed.

I have one second to admire his body in all its perfection before he’s reaching into his dresser and pulling out—big surprise—a pair of Versace boxer briefs, sans mustaches, devil horns, and peace signs.

“Look!” I tell him as I get up to rummage in the drawer. “They’re all Versace all the time again.”
