“Get out of here!” I yell after one bout of flames gets extra close. “I’ve got this.”
But Grace just rolls her eyes and ignores me, flying back and forth in front of the dragon until the beast lets out a frustrated scream.
“You’re pissing her off!” I shout at her.
“No shit, Sherlock!” she shouts back, and then she’s darting to the back of the dragon.
Asuga’s turning radius is much bigger than Grace’s, but she still manages to turn around quickly enough that I almost fall off. More flames shoot by Grace, but she darts under the dragon just in time, and Asuga roars again and goes into a dive that turns into a somersault as Grace darts back up into the sky.
Fuck this. I need a weapon and I need to end this. Now.
Suddenly, I spot something. The church steeple directly ahead of us. It’s long and pointy and metal and sharp enough to do some serious damage. I just need to get Asuga a little closer to it.
“Grace!” I shout, and when she looks up at me, I point toward the church.
For a second, she looks confused, but then her eyes widen, and she races straight for it. But those moments of broken concentration cost her, because the dragon pulls in closer, and this time her fire gets near enough to singe the ends of Grace’s hair.
My heart stops as the edges smolder, but in the end, they don’t catch fire—and neither does Grace as she breaks what I’m pretty sure is all speed records for gargoyles as she shoots toward the church. And its steeple.
A few somersaults and a quick dive down and we’re right there. Asuga is so focused on Grace that she’s barely paying attention to me at all—which is exactly what I need right now. So I lean to the side just a little bit and as we fly by, I reach down and, using every ounce of vampire strength I can muster, tear the steeple right off the roof.
At that exact second, Grace races up to the time dragon and kicks her in the nose hard enough to have her screaming and belching fire. And chasing her higher, higher, higher into the sky.
That’s when I strike, taking advantage of the distraction to lean down, this time with the steeple in my hand. And as the first moments of daylight break across the sky, I ignore the feel of the sun touching—burning—my skin as I swing the steeple sideways as hard as I can, straight into the dragon’s jugular.
Orange blood gushes out like a geyser, showering Grace and me with the disgusting, viscous stuff. The dragon stutters midflight, rears her head back as I pull the steeple out. Then I shift it to my other hand and raise it high above my head to gain momentum.
