Of course, as soon as she’s dislodged Grace, she shoots a stream of fire straight at her. And Grace is too dizzy from the shaking to notice.

My heart freezes in my chest, and I scream her name at the top of my lungs. My voice must get through, because Grace drops several feet in the air at the last second, and the flames fly right by.

The dragon screams in outrage and shoots closer to her, and in desperation I scale my way up the clock tower at a run. It’s not high enough—not nearly high enough to get me to the dragon—but I have to try. I have to find a way to keep her from killing Grace.

Polo runs up the clock tower’s stairs right along with me. I’m so focused on Grace that I don’t pay any attention to him until we get to the roof.

“I’ll throw you,” he says, and I have one second to think that this is the worst plan ever.

But I don’t have a better one, and the dragon is taking aim at Grace, so I nod my assent. And run straight up on the hand he’s got braced on his knee. Then I jump as hard as I can as he pushes me up as hard as he can and somehow, somehow it works.

I get just high enough to grab onto the dragon’s feet, which freaks her out enough that she forgoes spraying Grace with fire to try to shake me off. I hold on as hard as I can, though, and when she tucks in her wings and starts racing toward the nearest building—I’m guessing to scrape me off like gum on the bottom of her shoe—I do the first thing I think of.

I start to climb.

Straight up her feet to her legs, straight up her leg until I’m close enough to jump to her tail. She’s waving it around like a kite in a windstorm, so I almost miss and land somewhere much, much worse.

In the end, I manage to avoid a close encounter of the unpleasant kind and get one hand on her tail. I have to dig in, gouging my fingers into her flesh to do it, and then I’m swinging myself up and onto her back.

Which is exactly where I swore I’d never be again after the last fucking time dragon. But vampires don’t get to be choosers—especially when they’re flying—so here I am. Back in the saddle again.

The only problem is I don’t have a weapon of any kind, and Asuga is massive. She’s not going down without some help.

Even worse, she’s still focused on Grace, who is flying around her in circles, trying to find some way to help me…and dodging fire every few seconds as she does.
