And they aren’t just any kind of umbras, either. They certainly aren’t little, cute, squishable umbras like Smokey was. No, these things are serious. And ugly. And absolutely terrifying.
At first, the ones on the grass turn into shadow bugs—shadow roaches and ants and spiders crawling and writhing over the grass in their effort to get to the people standing against Souil.
“Oh my God!” I gasp as the umbra brushing against me transforms into a wave of shadow tarantulas crawling over my feet and up my legs. “Hudson!”
It’s more of a whimper than a scream, but my mate hears me. He fades to grab me and lift me up, but I’m already turning to stone. Which really doesn’t help much, considering there are still bugs crawling on me.
But at least I can’t feel it—not in the same way I could when I was human, anyway. And at least this way, they can’t bite me, which is more than I can say for so many of the other people around me right now.
Unfortunately, I also can’t move like this. At least not well. So, after screaming internally for what feels like a solid minute, I shift into my regular gargoyle form—and then lift up so I’m hovering a good two feet off the ground where Hudson is stuck, shadow roaches streaming along his legs and arms.
“Do you want me to lift you up?” I ask, reaching for him. “Get you out of this mess?”
He looks disgusted as he kicks out at the bugs, but he just shakes his head. “We’ve got bigger problems.”
“Bigger problems than a narcissistic time wizard bent on global annihilation, a pissed-off time dragon, and an entire town square worth of creepy, crawly bugs?” I ask incredulously. “How exactly is that possible?”
Hudson doesn’t answer me. Instead, he just nods toward the sky behind me. And though I really, really don’t want to turn around, there isn’t anything else for me to do.
And that’s when I see them. Giant shadow ravens and vultures soaring through the air, dive-bombing anyone who tries to run. And anyone who gets too close to Souil—especially Caoimhe and Lumi, who are still chasing him along with the wolves.
“Is he doing this?” I ask, revulsion churning in my stomach as a pile of giant roaches scatters just beneath me.
Polo shrieks below as the shadow bugs crawl on his arms, cover his body, and rush over his face. Diving in his open mouth as he lets out another involuntary scream before taking off at an all-out run in an attempt to dislodge the bugs.
“It’s the Shadow Queen,” Hudson answers from between clenched teeth as the bugs start to bite him.
Of course it is. The bitch. I want to ask him more, but he shouts up to me, “Just kill the fucking dragon!”
