Before I can figure out what—if anything—to say, people are gathering around Hudson and me. And I know it’s time for us to get things going.
I look to Hudson, to see if he wants to say anything before I lay out the plan, but he just steps back with the others and waits for me to speak.
Which isn’t terrifying at all. After surreptitiously wiping my hands on my jeans, I take a deep breath and will my anxiety to stay under control. And then I just start.
“First of all,” I say, turning around as I speak so that I have a chance to look every single one of these people in the eye. They deserve that and so much more when I stand here asking them to fight. “I’d like to say thank you to all of you for being here tonight to help us make this stand. Many of you have known this was coming for a while. Known that one day you would have to stand up against the Shadow Queen and the mayor. We didn’t know it would be at the same time, but at least that means our nightmare will be over that much sooner.”
People murmur and nod, agreeing with me, and it helps keep the low-grade panic in my stomach in check.
“Because we can’t go on worried that every day—every Starfall—will be our last. Worried that the lives and families we’ve built here in Noromar will disappear one day because some wizard or some queen wills it so.”
“No!” shouts someone from the crowd. “We won’t go!”
“You’re damn right we won’t!” Nyaz agrees, lending his voice to mine. “This is our village. These are our friends. These are our lives. And we will fight for them, down to the last one of us. No wizard is going to blink all of us out of existence.”
Cheers go up from a lot of the people around us. Hudson and I don’t cheer—I may agree with the sentiment Nyaz is expressing, but I don’t think I’ll ever be good with clapping and whistling for a war.
My parents raised me to believe that fighting was a last resort. Walking away from a fight that doesn’t matter is always a better option than getting hurt or hurting someone. But there’s a big difference between a bully calling me names on the playground or someone graffitiing my bike to letting a person follow his own selfish plans and basically ruin an entire world—and so many of the lives in it.
This isn’t a fight to cheer about, but it isn’t a fight to walk away from, either.
