I’m impressed with how quickly things are getting done, especially considering the village doesn’t have a mayor anymore to direct things. As far as I know, Souil is still locked up in that massive house of his, waiting for the first rays of sunlight to destroy everything all these people are working so hard to fix.

It’s infuriating, hateful, and it makes me want nothing more than to rip him apart limb from limb. I know that’s not possible at the moment, considering all the power he’s got bouncing around inside him, but that doesn’t make it any less true. This guy is a manipulative fucking bastard, and the world would be a better fucking place without him in it.

Soon enough, I promise myself as I stride through the square to one of the side streets lined with shops. Soon enough, we’ll make sure that fucker never gets to mess with anyone again.

It’s a promise to myself as much as it is to everyone else he’s hurt, and I tell myself I’m going to keep it.

As I walk, a few village regulars finally start to come back out onto the streets, wave at me as I pass. I make a mental note to talk to Nyaz again about ensuring everyone is inside for the coming battle.

The damn werewolves growl and posture the second I walk by, and it makes me want to give them something to growl about. But I don’t have time for their bullshit—I want to get back before Grace wakes up—so I walk on by without so much as a snide look. It hurts a little, though, especially when the short, stocky one lets out a growl he thinks is going to intimidate me.

But fuck it. I’ve got tougher shit than them to deal with right now, so I don’t even bother to flash my fangs. Instead, I just look for what I need in the shop windows.

I’m halfway down the boutique-lined street when I find the perfect shop and almost pass out when I see the shopkeeper inside. A fist clamps around my stomach as I open the door, but I ignore it and keep on walking. Nerves have no place here, not when I’ve already made up my mind.

It’s a small shop, and I take my time, walking around slowly until I find exactly what I’m looking for. Then I stand there for a minute, looking down at it as joy and terror war inside me.

One quick conversation with the man behind the counter, plus an unavoidable fifteen-minute wait later, and I’m on my way back to the inn. I force myself not to fade, to enjoy every moment that I’m living. It’s harder than it should be, considering Grace is probably still asleep.
