“I’m lucky like that.” I chuckle as I run my fingers through the softness of her flower-scented hair and smooth it out of the way. Then I take a second or two to rub my thumb over her collarbone even as I scrape my fangs against her jugular.
Grace gasps and arches against me, and still I wait. Still, I let the anticipation build until she’s moving restlessly against me.
Only then do I strike, my teeth piercing her skin as hunger washes through me in a wave. She tugs on my hair, tries to press me closer as I drink and drink and drink.
I take my time, going slowly to make sure I don’t hurt her. To make sure I don’t take too much.
She turns to warm honey against me as I lick the small wounds closed, her body wrapping around mine until I can’t tell where I leave off and she begins.
“I love you,” I tell her. “Forever.”
Her arms tighten around me. “I love you the same way.”
“I’m glad.” I press a kiss to her mouth, then hold her as she slowly drifts off to sleep.
It takes me a little longer—my mind is full of what ifs and hows—but eventually I sleep, too.
I wake up early the next morning to the sound of Grace screaming. I sit straight up in bed, heart racing and hands clenched into fists, only to realize that it was all a dream. She might have been screaming in my sleep, but the real Grace is rolled onto her side right now, snoring softly.
I lay back down, will my heart to stop pounding. But even as I do, I know there’s no way I’m going back to sleep. Not with everything the next twenty-four hours will bring rolling through my head like the most fucked-up montage on the planet.
I give up a few minutes later and get out of bed. Take a quick shower. Then throw on some jeans and head into town. I don’t know what things look like down in the square and beyond, but I have something I need to do before Grace wakes up. I just hope some of the shopkeepers braved the burned-up streets of Adarie to try to make a living today.
But I don’t even make it out of the inn before Nyaz stops me and asks if Grace and I would feel comfortable being the bait to get Souil out of his house later tonight.
I agree—mainly because I know we’d both planned to do it anyway—then head out to run my errands.
But as I walk out of the inn, I realize town square is still closed up tight due to all the damage. People from the city have started working on it, though—collecting trash, picking up the broken equipment from the hospital last night, cleaning away the ruined landscape.
