Who knows if we’ll have that little house or if we’ll have nothing at all?

Who knows if we’ll even exist in twenty-four hours?

The idea of losing Hudson—in battle or because of the vagaries of time—hurts in a way that threatens to destroy me.

But I’m not going to let it. Not now when I have no idea what the future holds. And not now, when this might very well be the last time we ever spend alone together.

We’re both exhausted from being up all night wrestling a dragon and a time wizard—and then trying to figure out how to do it all over again tomorrow. Nyaz assures us the main gate will hold the Shadow Queen and her army till morning as well, since she’s at her weakest without sunlight. But we’ve barely gotten our shoes off before there’s a knock on the door.

“What now?” I ask.

Hudson just shakes his head wearily as he pulls it open.

It turns out Nyaz was kind enough to send up a cheese and fruit plate for me and several bottles of water for the both of us. I eat a few crackers and some westeberries, but my stomach is churning and I’m afraid I’ll throw up if I eat too much.

Instead, Hudson and I take a long shower, reveling in the feel of the hot water rushing over us as we try to wash the nightmare of the last days off ourselves.

It’s even harder than it sounds, though I do my best not to think about it.

If we survive, the horror of last night will be with me for a long time to come. I can take it out and examine it later, when I don’t feel so fragile. For now, all I want to do is get through the next several hours. Then I’ll worry about my grief—and about figuring out how to stop a wizard who has had centuries to plan this very moment.

When we finally get into bed, Hudson lays on his back staring up at the ceiling, one arm bent behind his head. He hasn’t fed yet—he says he’s not hungry, but I can feel his hunger beating at him. Can hear it in the low rumble in his chest. Can see it in the way his gaze lingers on my throat when I lean over him.

But I can also see the sorrow in his face and the way he keeps glancing over at Smokey’s little bed by the window.

She hated me at least sixty percent of the time, and I know I’m going to miss her. I can’t imagine how much Hudson is going to miss her and just how heartbroken he must be in this moment.
