“But—” Nyaz begins, understanding dawning. “If the gargoyle in our town square is truly a real gargoyle, how can we convince her to free the dragon? She’s a statue.”
I glance at Hudson.
“Grace can talk to her.”
And he’s right. I can. When I’d frozen Smokey with me, I could hear her chattering in my head nonstop. There’s a real possibility if I touched the statue and froze with her, I could talk to the other gargoyle.
Even the idea of talking to someone else like me has my heart pounding in my chest. I have so many questions for her. I’ve had to figure out what it means to be a gargoyle without any help from someone else like me. To know I’m not alone, that there’s someone who’s had to learn the same things, who could teach me, is amazing. And not just anyone. A great warrior, if the statue is any indication.
“Yes, I think I can talk to her,” I agree.
“But even if she frees the dragon, how do we get her to attack the mayor—and not kill everyone else?” Nyaz asks, running a hand along his chin.
“We lure the mayor into a trap, of course,” Hudson says, and I know he’s making it sound much easier than he thinks it will be. “He’ll have to come out of his house at some point when the sun rises so he can travel in the shadows through the barrier—and that’s when we’ll attack.”
I take a deep breath and blow it out slowly. My anxiety isn’t rearing its ugly head—surprisingly, considering everything we’ve gone through tonight—but I still need to clear my head. A trap that’s foolproof, of course. But none of that matters if I can’t convince the gargoyle to help us.
I take one more deep breath. Then turn to Nyaz and say, “I will try to convince her—”
I break off as a loud clattering comes from directly outside the door.
Hudson’s there in a second, opening it up to see what’s happened—only to find one of the inn’s housekeepers on the ground behind the counter trying to pick up the large executive desk pad she must have knocked down—along with everything on it, including Nyaz’s book, dinner plate, and water glass.
“What’s going on here?” he demands, coming out from behind his desk.
“I’m sorry, sir. I’m so sorry,” the housekeeper says as she places everything back on the front desk.
“I’m not worried about what you knocked down, Yrrah,” he tells her as she starts picking up the broken shards of his cup. “I’m worried about what you’re doing behind my desk in the first place.”
