“Souil showed us he could blink a building in and out of existence—out of our timeline—implying he could do the same to all of us. It was meant as a threat, but…” Hudson pauses. “Who else would be resistant to time magic other than another being made of time magic? And I think Souil knows it, because he has never appeared until after we’ve killed each dragon. I don’t think his brand of power will help in a fight against a time dragon in the slightest. He’d be toast.”

My heart is racing. If that’s true, maybe we’re not all completely fucked. Well, except for, “But where do we get another time dragon? Souil said he’s waited centuries for the ones we brought,” I say.

“Exactly. He waited for us to destroy both dragons.” Hudson leans back in his chair, looks from me to Nyaz, then shakes his head. “If all he needed was the magic of a time dragon—why didn’t he leave after we killed the first one? He stayed another three months, waited on us to kill a second dragon, and now he says he can go home when the sun rises.”

Hudson pops to his feet and walks over to the window before continuing. “We know he killed a dragon in the past—because the dragon that followed him to the Shadow Realm isn’t still attacking. That and he’s somehow managed to live a thousand years. But when he killed that dragon, why didn’t he leave then, either?” He turns around to face us again, one eyebrow raised. “I think he needs two. Always needed two. One to absorb enough power to reset time—and another’s power to get home. Which means…”

“Which means what?” Nyaz asks, clearly not understanding.

But I do. “Souil is many things, but he wouldn’t come all the way here to save his daughter without a way home. He came with someone else—someone else who caused a second dragon to follow them.”

Hudson nods. “And since he’s still here, since he didn’t use that dragon’s magic to get home, that second dragon must still be alive.”

I walk over to the window Hudson had been staring out, and I can just make out the giant statue at the other end of the town square. “The statue isn’t…”

“A statue?” Hudson finishes. “No, I don’t think she is.”

My pulse is racing. I whisper, “I’m not the only gargoyle in Noromar, am I?”

Hudson puts an arm around my shoulders, pulls me in tight by his side. “No, Grace, I don’t think you are.”

“The statue is an actual gargoyle,” I whisper in awe. But then my eyes go wide. “A gargoyle frozen with a time dragon.”
