As he does, the sparkly red ribbon she wore for tonight flutters in the breeze. And one harsh and terrible shudder rips through his body.

“I’m sorry,” he whispers to her. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.”

“Hudson.” I crouch down next to him and wrap my arms around his shoulders. “It’s not your fault. None of this is your fault.”

“I didn’t see it,” he says. “I knew there was something off about that arsehole, but I thought he was harmless. I didn’t stop him and now—” His voice breaks, so he clears his throat before trying again. “Now she’s dead. And Orebon’s dead. And there’s nothing I can do about it.”

“We can stop him,” I say, talking to Hudson but also to Lumi and Caoimhe. “He doesn’t have to get away with this—”

Caoimhe’s snort cuts through the silent night air. “And how are we going to do that, Grace? We can’t catch him. Your vampire, the fastest person in this entire realm, can’t even get near him. How the fuck are we supposed to stop someone who can kill us anytime he wants in ways that we’ll never see coming? It’s impossible.”

I want to tell him that nothing is impossible, but then I look at Orebon, at Smokey, and I know that’s not true. Some problems really are insurmountable, and there’s nothing we can do about that.

“I’m sorry,” I whisper to Hudson as I pull him closer and press my lips to his neck.

He seems to dissolve right in front of me, his whole body shaking with the energy it takes to keep his grief inside. He doesn’t cry. He doesn’t sob. He just takes it all in. Absorbs the anger and sorrow and pain, like it’s second nature.

It’s strange to see him like this—strange and heartbreaking. Practically from the minute we met, he’s been my rock—the one steady thing in my life that was there no matter what.

And who always had my back, no matter what.

To see him shaken like this—destroyed like this—wounds me in a way I never expected. I hold him tighter, try to pull his grief inside me, try to make it so he doesn’t hurt so badly because he chooses to share his pain with me.

But this is Hudson, who is pretty much the definition of self-sufficient when it comes to pain. He’s handled it all alone his whole life, without ever thinking to ask anyone for help or even a little support.

But that’s not who he is anymore, and it’s definitely not who I want to be when I’m with him. The girl who just sits back and lets her man bear all the pain. No thank you.
