“I’m on it!” she yells back, and she is, leaping into the air in a blink. We need the dragon to think she can catch us because we need her to stay interested in us and not go find another, easier target. Like poor Lumi, for example, who is currently cowering under the park bench he just puked behind.

Determined to make sure the dragon doesn’t focus on Lumi, I lay on the speed just a little more. The dragon responds by sending a streak of flames straight at me. I manage to swerve out of the way in time, but it’s a little too close for comfort.

I glance above and find Grace, her brown eyes narrowing dangerously as she says, “I’ve got an idea.”

“What idea?” I ask, right before she executes a pretty impressive midair flip, turning around and flying close enough to the dragon to touch her nose before flipping again and flying straight for the town gate.

Which pisses the dragon the hell off—exactly what Grace was intending.

The flying beast goes wild and lays on speed in a wild effort to catch her. But Grace lays on speed, too. And just like that, they’re caught in a high-speed chase that I’m terrified isn’t going to end well for Grace.

It’s a feeling that’s reinforced by the fact that, as the dragon gains on Grace, she releases one stream of fire after the other. Grace—whose flying skills have improved a lot in the last several weeks—spins, ducks, and dodges away from the flames.

At least until one manages to catch the tip of her wing and throws everything out of whack.

Grace screams as she starts plummeting to the earth, the dragon hot on her tail. She tries to pull up, but the dragon either got really lucky or knew exactly where to aim, because Grace’s wing has lost whatever it is that makes it aerodynamic.

She’s currently in a flat spin, headed straight toward the ground.

As I fade across the terrain, I’m terrified I’m not going to make it in time. Especially since the fall isn’t the biggest of her problems. The dragon is catching up to her now that she’s no longer in control and the closer the creature gets, the more convinced I am that she plans to light Grace up for good.

I’m not going to let that happen.

I fade to them with only one thought in my mind—getting Grace out of the dragon’s line of fire. And when the dragon lets loose another stream of flames so close to Grace that it will fry her to a crisp, I’m left with no choice. I jump straight up to intercept it, throwing my body between Grace and the fire.
