My strong, radiant, powerful mate, who faces down everything that comes her way with courage and compassion. Even now, as we prepare for what we both know may be a bloodbath in every possible way, she is resolute in her determination to do what needs to be done. And still, she takes a moment to revel in the beauty of the world around her.

How could I not love her?

How could I not want her for an eternity?

She’s the universe’s gift to me, and if I can just have her and nothing else, then I’ll be satisfied. And I’ll still consider myself luckier than I have any right to be.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” she asks when our eyes finally meet.

“Just feeling grateful.”

She lifts her brows. “We’re about to go into the biggest fight of our lives, and you’re feeling grateful?”

“Strange, I know.” I reach behind her and pluck a flower from one of the many garlands draped around the town square. When I hold it out to her, I say, “I know it’s not a flower crown, but—”

Her eyes go misty. “For me?”

“No, for Smokey,” I tease. “She’s behind you.”

Grace just rolls her eyes. “Give me my flower.”

“I already told you. It’s for—”

She snatches it out of my hand and tucks it into the curls above her left ear. “Touch it and I’ll break every bone in your hand.”

It’s my turn to raise a brow. “It’s kind of hard to fight a dragon one handed.”

“Well, then, you know what you need to do, don’t you?” Her voice is prim and proper, but the look in her eyes is that of a warrior goddess who bends for no man.

“I am so ridiculously crazy about you.”

She grins. “As you should be.” Then she takes hold of my hand and starts pulling me through the streets.

“Where are we going?” I ask as she pulls me deeper into the square.

“I have a surprise for you.”

“Oh yeah?”

She laughs. “Don’t give me that look. It’s not that kind of a surprise.”

“A guy can dream, can’t he?” But I’m just teasing her, and she knows it, even as she rolls her eyes at me.

She pulls me all the way through the square, past the closed food trucks and the empty activity tents and the quiet gazebo.

Grace makes a noise low in her throat and starts tugging me harder. “It’s almost dark.”

Because the surprise seems so important to her, I hurry up. Then freeze when I realize where she’s brought me. The clock tower.

“What did you do?” I ask.

She smiles just a little sexily. “Guess you’ll have to come inside with me if you want to find out.”
