“Yes, I tried that,” Souil tells him with a blithe wave of his hand. “But the town council outvoted me. Told me there was almost no chance that our two most esteemed new citizens would allow the dragon to enter the city limits. It was hard enough to convince them to cancel the festival in the first place, as most don’t believe the dragon is coming back after what Grace and Hudson did to her last time.”

He doesn’t sound that upset the council doesn’t agree. In fact, he looks like he’s relishing something going wrong so he can hold it over the council’s head. At least until he glances my way and realizes I’m studying him. Then he shakes his head and puts on a disgusted face, one I’m not sure I buy.

A quick glance at Hudson tells me he feels the same. It makes me uneasy, makes me wonder if there’s more at play here than we know. But in the end, does it really matter if the mayor is in a war with the town council or not? I mean, as residents of Adarie ourselves, it could make things uncomfortable for us in the long run. But for the specific purpose of killing this dragon, it doesn’t really matter.

At least not if we can find a way to keep the people away from the fight and the casualties at zero, and we’ve put a lot of planning these last three months into doing just that.

“What happens if the town council is right?” Orebon asks. “What if we do all this and the dragon never shows?”

“The dragon will show,” the mayor tells him.

“How do you know?” I ask, gaze narrowed.

“The dragon will come,” Souil says in a voice that brooks no argument. “I know that for a fact. All we have to do is kill her when she does.”

And by we, he means the rest of us. But I’m not going to quibble.

To be honest, wizard or not, I don’t think he’d be much help out there. He’s actually shown zero magical abilities in all this time, to the point that Hudson and I have joked his “time wizard” is a title he’s given himself, much like “mayor.” Either that or his magic only works on his wardrobe.

We spend a few more minutes talking things through, making sure we’re as ready as we’re ever going to be. Then, once everybody else has left, Hudson and I head up.

We don’t talk on the stairs, mostly because there’s not a lot to say. Not about this. And since I’m pretty sure it’s the only thing either one of us is thinking about right now, there’s nothing else to talk about, either.
