But now, it’s the beginning of a new week, the night before Starfall, and we’re all a little on edge.
It’s late—so late that the tavern at the inn is closed and the townspeople tucked up in bed. So it’s just the troubadours, Hudson, Nyaz, Tinyati, and me sitting around a giant table in the center of the room when the mayor walks in.
“Hello, everyone! Hello!” He strides in confidently, like he owns the place, wearing psychedelic bell-bottoms and a bright red western shirt with leather fringe.
Beside me, Hudson chokes a little, but I refuse to look at him. If I do, I know I’ll crack up—especially since he called it on the multicolored bell-bottoms weeks ago.
“Hi, Souil,” Nyaz says, then walks behind the bar to pour him a drink. It’s purple—big shock—and loaded with fruit, and when he hands it to Souil, the mayor drinks it down in one long swallow.
“Bring me another, will you?” he asks, sliding the glass down the bar to the innkeeper, who catches it smoothly. Then he walks over to the empty chair next to me and sits down, kicking his feet up on the edge of the table.
“So, how’s everyone doing?” he asks. “Ready for the big night?”
“They are,” Tinyati says as she gathers up her bag before leaning down to give me a hug. “I’ve got to get home—the kids are a bear to get to bed for my husband alone. And they need a good night’s sleep for Starfall!”
“Wait, what?” I ask, confused. “You aren’t really going to let them outside, are you? What if the dragon—”
“Oh, no, of course not! But if there’s still a festival left on the second day—after the dragon attack—we’ve told them we can go.”
I nod as I remember the mayor had promised everyone a light show like they’d never seen after the dragon is taken care of, to make up for the canceled festival. In fact, Hudson and I had even made tentative plans—assuming all goes well—to watch the fireworks from the clock tower together.
“Is that what everyone is doing?” Lumi asks as he taps his fingers on the table nervously. “I really hope no one is going out on the streets.”
“We’ve warned everyone—even the tourists.” Souil shrugs. “Nothing we can do if they don’t heed our advice.”
“Actually, there is,” Hudson tells him, his voice dripping in irony. “You are the mayor. You can order a full lockdown tomorrow: a mandatory curfew.”
