I show him several different bracelets that I think both Macy and I would like, and he ends up choosing one that is a series of linked suns, made in a purple metal that is unique to the Shadow Realm.
“That’s a really great choice,” Tinyati says when we bring it to the register. “Grace, why don’t you check the mayor out and gift wrap the bracelet for him? Then you can head on home.”
“Home?” I look around the still-messy shop. “But—”
“You’ve already stayed late enough,” she says. “I know you and Hudson probably have plans, and I really appreciate you letting me infringe on them.”
Souil jokes with me as I ring him up, then wrap the bracelet in pretty gold paper with a purple bow. When I go to hand it to him, though, our hands accidentally brush for the first time since the handshake at his house.
My fingers glance over the ring on his right index finger and the second I touch it, a zap of electricity works its way up my arm.
But then the mayor is thanking me again before taking his package and disappearing out the door with a smile and a wave.
“He’s an odd one,” Tinyati says once the door is firmly closed behind him.
“Why do you say that?” I know why I think he’s odd, but she’s been around him a lot longer than I have. I know Hudson doesn’t trust him, but—today especially—he seems harmless. A little eccentric and a lot narcissistic, but still pretty harmless.
“Have you seen the way he dresses?” She shakes her head. “I’ve been telling him to come in for years. That I’ll get him a whole new wardrobe—with a really good discount—but he never listens.” She clucks her tongue. “He just keeps wearing those tight pants and all those chains. It’s truly bizarre.”
“And yet, you guys elected him mayor.”
“‘Elected’ is a pretty strong word for what happened, from what I understand. It was before my time.”
“What do you mean?” I ask as alarm bells start going off inside me. “You don’t have elections in Adarie?”
“I mean, not really. When he got here, Souil decided we needed a mayor to represent our interests with the Shadow Queen. When no one stepped up for the job, he volunteered himself and passed a petition that he be appointed mayor. He got a lot of the town to sign it and then suddenly started calling himself mayor.”
“How long ago was that?” I ask. “He’s been mayor for two hundred years, hasn’t he?”
“He was here before my great-grandparents were alive. So maybe, yeah.”
I think back to his house, which looks so much like a replica from a seventies mansion. “He’s been mayor for two hundred years, and no one’s ever won an election against him?”
