“Thank you!” He flashes her a grin. “That’s the one I’m looking forward to the most, actually.”

She smiles back, then reaches over and rubs his hand. “You know, a youth group meets here every Thursday evening. It’s a good place to make new…friends.”

I try not to be insulted by her words, but it’s hard not to take them personally when she’s acting like I’m not even standing here. Or when Hudson nods solemnly and says, “I’ll keep it in mind. Thanks.”

And oh my God. Is Hudson flirting with her?

By the time we make it back outside, I’ve decided we need to have this conversation once and for all. He can’t dance with me and kiss me and feed from me one night and just…nothing else for weeks. And he sure as hell can’t flirt with someone in front of said dance and kissing partner without some sort of explanation. ’Cause yeah, this is ridiculous.

“Would you rather be spending your time with Miss Librarian in there?” I ask, stamping my foot for good measure.

Hudson is jogging down the stairs where Smokey is waiting for him, but he pauses mid-step, turning to face me. I think he’s about to deny it—hope he’s about to deny it—because he looks like he’s about to say something important.

At least until he starts laughing his ass off.

“Seriously?” I snap. “You think that’s funny?”

“No, no, that’s not why I’m laughing,” he says. Or at least that’s what I think he says—he’s still laughing too hard for me to understand his every word.

“That girl was hitting on you right in front of me!” I snarl.

“Nah. She just wanted me to know I had prospects, that’s all.”

“You want prospects?” I ask, and I know I’m a little wild-eyed at this point. “Have at it. Have all the prospects.”

For the first time, he seems to clue in that I’m upset. Like, really upset. “Hey, Grace. I didn’t mean—”

“Don’t.” I throw up a hand to stop whatever BS he’s going to throw my way. And end up doing something else entirely.

At first, I don’t know what’s happening. I just know that it’s suddenly really hard to move. And then it registers. Holy shit. I just turned myself to stone.

“Did I just—”

“Yeah,” Hudson says, raising one eyebrow. “You did. Looks like you’d rather be stone than talk to me right now.”

“Maybe you should learn something from that, then,” I tell him.

“Maybe I should.” He waits for a second, but I still don’t have anything to say to him, so he continues. “This mean you’re planning on staying stone?”

“Maybe,” I tell him.
