I laugh. “True story. But they’ll be Saturday Night Fever white.”

“You don’t think I can rock a pair of white pants?” He pretends to be offended. “I’ll have you know my ass looks great in white.”

“Not sure that’s saying much.” I smile at the librarian, a young woman no more than a couple of years older than us, as I hand her my library card. I turn back to Hudson and mutter, “Your ass looks good in everything.”

The librarian’s eyes go wide, and she chokes a little—presumably on her own saliva—but she never stops scanning the books, so I figure she’s okay. But I narrow my eyes on her when her gaze dips down to check out the ass in question.

“Aww, you noticed.” Hudson presses a hand to his heart like he’s touched. Then he turns to the girl checking us out—checking him out—and offers a smile. “Hey, Dolomy.”

“Hi, Hudson,” she says, her cheeks pinking up just a little. “You coming to the reading of Talinger’s 77 Poems of Irreconcilable Light Saturday night?”

Hudson shakes his head. “Sadly, Saturday night is laundry night for me.” He winks at her, though. “Plus, I think perhaps he should have stopped at thirty-four, don’t you?”

The clerk giggles and the sound grates along my skin.

“I could do the laundry alone,” I suggest sweetly.

Hudson gasps. “I could never leave the only pair of Versace underwear I have left to your tender mercies. No telling what you’d do with them if you got them alone.”

“Buck up, buttercup. Surely we can find you a brand here in the Shadow Realm that’s just as—” I break off when he gives me a look.

“I’m not sure what adjective you were about to use to describe my Versace underwear, but only synonyms of the words ‘amazing’ and ‘fantastic’ are acceptable.” He narrows his eyes at me. “Consider yourself warned.”

“Oooh, now I’m scared.” I smile my thanks at the librarian as she hands me my stack, then step out of the way so she can check Hudson out, too. “But why on earth would you assume I have it in for your underwear?”

“Oh, I don’t know, history? You tend to go for the jugular.”

“That’s one hell of an accusation coming from a vampire.” But I pause, think about his words. “You don’t really believe that, do you?”

“Sure I do.” He snorts. “If my time with you has taught me anything, it’s that you don’t need to have fangs to draw blood.”

Ouch. I try to think of a comeback, but before I can, the librarian hands Hudson his books. “Here you go. I think you’ll really like the one on the physics of shadows. It’s very interesting.”
