Hudson and I drop our new clothes back at the inn, then head to the restaurant where we’re meeting the others, right on time. They’re already seated, so we join them amid a bunch of ribbing about how hard it is to make an honest living in retail.

“But seriously,” Caoimhe asks after everyone’s ordered. “Do you want to spend the rest of your life selling jeans and dresses?”

“Maybe,” I admit. “We’ll see how it goes after I try it, at least for the next three months. But at least my new boss seems super sweet, if a little bit pushy when it comes to taffeta, and I think she’ll be really easy to work for.”

“Three months?” Lumi asks. “What happens then?”

I shoot Hudson a look, but he just shrugs. I don’t think there’s any reason not to tell them about the time dragon coming back—or about it being an us-or-them kind of situation.

“The time dragon comes back,” I finally say.

“Time dragon?” Orebon repeats. “Those things that attacked the festival are time dragons? How do you know?”

“The mayor told us,” I say and then proceed to fill them in on everything we know so far about time dragons, rifts, and death warrants.

I don’t know why, but I leave out the mayor mentioning he was a time wizard. That’s one topic I want to talk to Hudson about later before I go blabbing it around town. Hudson hadn’t seemed surprised when Souil revealed that bit of news, so I’m really hoping he’s familiar with time wizards from back home and knows exactly what they’re capable of doing. If nothing else, I figure it explains why the mayor looks younger today than he did yesterday. Maybe even why he’s been alive so long? Could time wizards be called time wizards because they’re immortal? I make a mental note to ask Hudson all the questions later tonight.

Lumi lets out a long, low whistle. “Well, that’s certainly scary as hell.”

And it is.

The dragon could even attack tonight, although Hudson thinks it’s unlikely.

My breaths start to come short and shallow, and I realize I haven’t really had a panic attack since we got to Adarie. That track record seems like it’s coming to an end now.

I glance over at Hudson, but he’s already reaching under the table. He rests his large hand on mine on my thigh, then absently taps his finger against the top of my hand. I can’t help myself from counting along. One. Two. Three. Four. Five…

By the time I get to fifteen, I feel my chest relax and I’m able to pull a fairly decent breath into my lungs.

I mouth to him, Thank you, and he squeezes my hand.
