He waves me off. “You’ll love brunch. Trudgey and her sister Tringia are amazing chefs.” He puts his fingers to his mouth in a chef’s kiss gesture. “Everything they make is perfect.”
“I’m sure it is,” Hudson says, then turns to her. “Thank you for going through all the trouble for us today.”
She nods, then turns and heads back toward the kitchen. But no sooner has she left than the room fills up with people carrying serving tray after serving tray of food.
Some of the dishes I recognize—a fruit platter, for instance, even though the fruit is very different-looking than what I would eat at home. A basket of what I think are sweet rolls. Something in a pie pan that looks like it might be some kind of vegan quiche—if I ignore the fact that it seems to have been made using purple egg substitute. And finally, a steaming hot pot of what looks an awful lot like some kind of soft purple tofu.
I’m all for vegan meals—vegetables have always been one of my favorite things—but Noromar takes it to an extreme. I have nothing against normal tofu, but purple tofu? I’m not so sure about that.
“Is that a fondue?” I ask as one of the housekeepers puts a cast-iron pot down in the place of honor at the center of the table and someone else gives both Souil and me a little plate of bread and fruit to dip into it. A third person hands us each a long fork.
“It is! And it is just delightful! I would have it every day if I could, but Trudgey insists I watch my weight, so she reserves it for special occasions.”
“Oh, we’re not a special occasion—” I start, only to be cut off by another wave of his hand.
“Please, dear girl. The two of you are about as special as they come. I’ve been wanting to do this since you first showed up. It’s been decades since I’ve seen another human-type visitor like you, Grace! This is a celebration! In fact—”
He gets distracted when Trudgey comes back in with a bottle of bubbly wine and a pitcher of what I’m guessing is laranfon juice.
As she pours mimosas under the mayor’s watchful eye, I let my hair fall in my face and mouth to Hudson, Human-type?
He just shrugs and gives me a look reminding me that I’m the one who wanted to come to what is apparently a seventies-themed brunch, Noromar-style. Then again, Souil did say decades. Maybe that’s why his house looks like an homage to disco. His last human visitor must have been from the seventies, and Souil thinks this is still the height of current human fashion.
I can’t help but wonder what happened to that bell-bottomed visitor.
