And then she slides open the two ornate gold doors on the back wall and leads us into a dining room that just might be more garish than the living room—if that’s possible, which I wasn’t sure it was until this very moment.
“Have a seat,” he says, beckoning to the carved marble behemoth that doubles for a table in the center of the room. “Place cards have been set up for you, so please find your name.”
Place cards? There are only three of us here—and only three place settings on the giant table. How hard could it be for us to find a spot?
I don’t say anything, though, and neither does Hudson, much to my surprise and relief. Instead, he simply holds out the chair in front of the place card with my name on it and waits for me to sit.
After I do, he takes his seat across the large table from me as the mayor sits down at the head.
As he does, the light from the stacked-glass, circle-cut chandelier—which just might give the disco ball in the living room a run for its money in terms of ugliness—illuminates his face, and I realize he looks different than he did the first time we met him. Younger somehow. The lines that had been so pronounced when he spoke at the festival auditions seem minimized, less craggy.
Maybe that’s why he keeps these obnoxious chandeliers around—the light makes him look really, really good. That or he’s had some very solid work done in the last few months.
Then again, judging by the vanity showcased in this place, I can totally believe he’s recently had whatever passes for Botox in the Shadow Realm.
“Trudgey, please get our guest of honor a mimosa,” he says, gesturing to me. “And some water for the gentleman.”
“Of course,” Trudgey answers with a smile. “What kind of mimosa would you like, dear?”
“Actually, water is fine for me, too. I’m not really much of a drinker and—”
“Nonsense!” Souil insists. “Trudgey spent an hour squeezing laranfon for you this morning, just so we’d have fresh juice. You simply must try it. It’s delicious.”
“Of course.” I smile at Trudgey. “Thank you so much for doing that. I would love a larsa—”
“Laranfon,” she helps me out. “It’s a sweet and sour fruit the mayor simply loves. I’ll bring you both some water as well.”
“Thank you. I appreciate it.”
She nods and gives me another one of her kind smiles. Then turns to Souil and says, “If you’re ready, I’ll send in the food.”
“Of course we’re ready!” he blusters. “It’s after one. Grace must be starving!”
“Oh, I can—”
