And who is yelling down at me to go back to the ground, that it isn’t safe for me up here. To which I want to say, No shit, Sherlock. Because who actually thinks it’s safe for me to be doing this right now? But another thing that isn’t safe is Hudson being dropped by a dragon from a thousand feet up. So if he wants to yell at anyone, he should yell at himself for getting us both into this ridiculous situation.

Of course, by the time I drop down for about the fiftieth time, I’m pretty close to yelling myself. How do people do this? Seriously. Flint made it look so easy, but this isn’t easy at all. What am I doing wrong?

I try to think back to all the superhero movies I’ve seen. How did they fly? I think Iron Man had his hands by his sides, but I’ve been doing that since I got up here and it hasn’t worked at all. But Superman flies with his arms out in front of him, right? It’s not a look I’m confident I can pull off, but he doesn’t die, so maybe I should try that.

But that’s easier said than done, since the second I upset the kind-of sort-of balance I’ve finally manage to establish, I end up flipping upside down—which, for the record, is also not a great way to fly. Who knew?

Still, I’m not quite ready to give up on this arms-in-front thing. So I engage every core muscle I have, thrust my arms out in front of me, and use them to essentially guide where I want to go as I simultaneously imagine making powerful strokes through the air with my giant wings.

At first, it doesn’t seem like anything has changed. But then I start to go up. And not just a little bit. I’m going way up, straight at Hudson, thank God. And this whole new arrangement makes me go way faster, so yay Superman.

In fact, I’m going so fast that I’m catching up to Hudson and the dragon, which is a very good thing because the dragon is leveling out, like he’s finally reached cruising altitude. Which I’m terrified signifies he’s about to drop Hudson.

The thought has me pushing myself even harder, to go faster, faster, faster.

I try not to think about how I’m not a great catcher at the best of times, so trying to snag a falling vampire in midair—while also managing to not die myself—might be a little above my skill set right now.

Still, I didn’t come all this way up here for nothing. I have to try something.

I just wish I knew what.
