His words snap me out of the panic I’m feeling about whatever’s happening to me. Or, if they don’t snap me out of it, they at least refocus it. Because he’s right. The dragon is coming back, and he looks pissed. And so does the friend he brought back with him.

“What do we do now?” I ask. Part of me wants to run, but can I even do that? I’m stone. I’m freaking stone. Stone can’t run. Can it? “How do we fix this?”

I’m ashamed to admit that I’m not sure if I’m talking about the dragons or me.

“Hey, cool.” Caoihme drops in from wherever she’s been hiding. “You’re not just a human. You’re a gargoyle. That’s even better.”

“I’m a what?” I ask, and my voice is so high at this point, I’m pretty sure it’s a dog whistle. Or it would be if the Shadow Realm had dogs.

“A gargoyle,” Hudson repeats, like it makes perfect sense. “Of course you are.”

“Of course I am?” I hold my hand out and stare at fingers that look familiar but not, because they’re stone. “There’s no ‘of course’ about any of this.”

“Again.” Orebon’s voice sounds urgent from where he is still hiding inside the gazebo. “Dragons—plural—bearing down on us at three o’clock.”

“What do we do?” I ask Hudson because my ability to think of a plan left right around the time I grew horns. “What do we do?”

“My first suggestion is to run,” he answers, grabbing my hand.

“I don’t know if I can do that!” I say, but then he’s taking off, and I’m running right beside him. It’s actually more like I’m jogging and he’s dragging me along, but it works. And a quick glance back tells me our new friends are running right beside us.

“Where are we going?” I ask, breathless because running in this body is way harder than running in my own. Or maybe I’m just having a panic attack. It’s a little hard to tell right now.

“Somewhere it’s easier to run defense,” Hudson says as we turn down a street and skid to a quick stop behind a tall building. His gaze is bouncing around the various streets, I’m sure calculating the best route for us to take next. “And somewhere without so many people around who could get hurt.”

It’s a good point. Even though most of the people ran at the first sign of the dragon, a lot of them didn’t go far. And some are still in the square. They’re hiding, but they’re definitely here—and definitely dragon fodder if we don’t get them out of here.
