The dragon takes off in a wild flapping of wings, his screams echoing through the square. I don’t know where he’s going or if he’s coming back. I just know that I have a second to breathe. We all do, thankfully.
“Grace!” Hudson shouts as his hand wraps around mine. “Are you okay? Are you—” He breaks off as he stares me up and down, his blue eyes wide and wild.
And I get it. I do. Because something is really wrong with me. Or not wrong, but definitely different. My senses feel keener, and I feel stronger, too. Heck, I feel incredible.
“I’m okay,” I tell him, because—by some miracle—I am.
I don’t know how. I was sure that dragon was going to kill me, was prepared to die if it meant somehow giving the dragon what he wanted. If it meant he would leave Hudson and the rest of the people in this village alone.
Only I’m not dead—and neither is the dragon. I’m stone—except not. I can move. I can breathe. I can talk.
Which isn’t terrifying at all. Because, yay for not being reduced to ash—this must have been how I survived that first fire attack when we left the lair—but what the fuck is happening to me?
Did the dragon’s fire somehow do this? And if so, how do I fix it? I need to fix it. Like, now!
“You’ve got wings,” Hudson says as he stares at me, slack-jawed.
“What do you mean?” I twist my head back and forth trying to see what he’s talking about, and damn if he isn’t right. I’ve got wings. Two wings. Two big freaking wings coming out of my shoulder blades. How is that possible?
What the fuck just happened to me?
“And horns.” He tentatively reaches his free hand out to touch my head.
“Excuse me?” Horror rips through me as I bring my hand up to the top of my head. And realize, as my fingers tangle with Hudson’s, that they are resting on a horn.
A freaking horn. Even worse, there are two of them. Sure, maybe that’s better than one, because I’m not a freaking unicorn. But still.
Horns.
Stone.
Wings.
Fireproof.
And, oh yeah, did I mention I have HORNS?????
“What the hell is happening to me?” I whisper to Hudson as terror whips through me.
“Umm, I hate to be the one to interrupt what seems like a well-deserved freak-out.” Lumi’s voice comes from behind me. “But I feel it would be remiss of me not to point out that the dragon’s coming back—with its bigger, badder older brother.”
