“Yeah.” I blow out a breath, shove a hand through my hair. “Somehow I knew you were going to say that, but it was worth a shot.”

“It really wasn’t.” She scowls. “Now, are we coming up with a plan or are we just going to wing it? No pun intended.”

“What kind of plan do you have in mind?”

“I don’t know. You’re the vampire.” She gives me a “don’t you have something up your sleeve?” look.

“I love how the vampire thing only matters when you want it to matter,” I grouse.

She gives me her most innocent look. “Is that a problem?”

And fuck. Even knowing what she’s doing, I fall for it. Not the sentiment that things should always be her way, but still. When she looks at me like that, it’s impossible for me to say no.

“How are you with heights?” I ask as the beginning of a plan starts to come to me. It’s not a good one, but it’s a plan, and that has to count for something, right?

“I mean, I’m up here, aren’t I?” she retorts.

“Yeah, but do you think you can get yourself down?”

Another blaze of fire illuminates the night sky behind us—and her face as she gives me a very definite “what the fuck?” look. “Are there steps? Or do you just want me to climb on over the edge?”

“I was thinking climb over the edge, but stairs would be good, too,” I say as I look around for a door.

“Wow. Ten seconds ago, you wanted me to hide up here. Now you think I can just pull a King Kong on the Empire State Building? Your faith is touching.”

“I have no doubt you can do anything you want to,” I tell her. “I just would prefer you not die while doing it.”

“You and me both,” she says, peering over the edge of the clock tower at the long climb down. “Stairs would be good.”

“Fair enough.”

More screams fill the air, and I glance down to see the dragon narrowing in on another one of the tents. This one is the bright red one that housed children’s activities for the festival.

Horror tears through me. Because no. That’s not going to happen.

“The trapdoor’s over there.” I point to a small rectangle in the floor. “Take the stairs and I’ll meet you down there.”

“What are you going to do?” she asks suspiciously.

“Try not to die,” I answer. “Now go!”

I don’t wait to see if she listens to me. Not with that bloody dragon bearing down on the tent full of children. Instead, I lever myself up onto the handrail and let out the loudest, most high-pitched whistle I can manage.
