He drops the woman right in the center of the town square. I’m grateful that we’re too far away for Grace to hear the squelch and the sound of her bones breaking when she hits the ground. But I can, and it’s a sound that will stick with me for a very long time.

Especially since I don’t think who he picked up, a woman with light-brown skin and thick brown hair—just like Grace’s—is a coincidence. I think he’s hunting very specific prey.

Grace whimpers as she stares down at the woman. It’s not loud, per se, but dragons have hearing almost as good as vampires, and the last thing I want is for her to attract his attention right now. Not when he’s apparently holding quite the grudge from our last run-in.

Grabbing Grace’s hand, I pull her down to the floor of the clock tower so that she’s hidden by the wooden guardrail that goes all the way around it. It’s not a huge defense, especially if he catches our scent, but it’s better than just leaving her standing up there to wave when he flies on by.

“What are you doing—” She breaks off as the truth registers. “He’s here looking for us, isn’t he?”

“Yes.” And I’m going to make damn sure he doesn’t find Grace. No way is she going to end up like that woman out there.

She, however, doesn’t seem to have the same attitude about that as I do.

“We have to get down there,” she tells me urgently. “We did this to them. We brought that thing here. We can’t just leave them to fight him alone.”

I know she’s right, and if it were just me, I wouldn’t hesitate. I’d already be down there. But now I’ve got Grace to consider. And the truth is, I don’t give a shit about any of those people. Not when their lives are weighed against Grace’s. I’ve lost everyone I’ve ever cared about in my life. No way am I losing her, too. Not here. And not to that fucking piece-of-shit dragon.

“Hudson!” she urges when I don’t respond immediately. “We have to go!”

“I don’t suppose you’d consider staying here and letting me go?” I ask as someone else screams bloody murder—seconds before another sickening squelch fills the air.

“Why? Because you’re the man?” she asks scornfully.

“Because I’m the vampire,” I answer just as scornfully. “It’s a lot harder to kill me than it is to kill you.”

“Yeah, well, I guess we’re going to have to figure out how not to let that happen,” she shoots back at me. “Because there’s no way I’m sitting up here like some damsel in distress while people are down there dying because of me.”
