A million different answers spring to the tip of my tongue, some of them honest, some of them lies, all of them dangerous. So I swallow each but the most innocuous one back. “To dance. Come on.” I hold out a hand to him. “I’ll teach you.”

He gives me an amused look. “I never said I couldn’t dance.”

“Yes, you did. Down there, when I asked you to dance, you told me you don’t dance.”

“Exactly. I don’t dance. That doesn’t mean I can’t.”

“Are you kidding me? You’ve known how to dance this whole time? That’s so uncool.”

“In what world would the heir to the vampire throne not know how to dance?” he asks. “Balls are still a thing in the Vampire Court—and a lot of the other courts as well.”

“That’s it. That settles it.”

“Settles what?” he asks, but I don’t answer.

Instead, I pull out my phone, which I still carry around mostly as a placebo, since the internet doesn’t exist in this realm and calls can’t exactly travel through the barrier. But the inn came with a handy solar charger, and the one thing the phone does still do is house things I’ve already downloaded. Including my music.

“What are you doing?”

“Picking out a song,” I tell him. “Right here, right now, while we’re on top of the freaking world, you’re going to dance with me.”

He looks wary. “I already told you I don’t dance.”

“Yeah, well, we’re going to change that tonight.”

He looks even warier. “Grace—”

“You know what? Pretend you’re Nike and Just Do It, Vega,” I tell him, right before I hit Play on the song I picked out and the first notes of Walk the Moon’s “Shut Up and Dance” come through my phone’s speaker.

Hudson cracks up. “This is the song you want to dance to?”

The song chooses that moment to hit the title lyrics, and I point in the air like they’re hanging in a bubble above my head. Hudson shakes his head, but he grabs my hand and pulls me toward him in a very sophisticated spin.

And then he dances the hell out of me on top of that clock tower. Spinning, twisting, twirling, we cover every single inch of our makeshift dance floor. And when the song winds down, Hudson pulls me in for the big finish, a twirl and dip that would put any professional tango dancer to shame.

By the time he pulls me up, I’m laughing in pure joy. He shakes his head, then laughs along with me.

“You’re freaking amazing!” I tell him. “That was so much fun!”

“Yeah?” For a second, he grins like he doesn’t have a care in the world, and all I can see is his irresistible dimple.
