For the first time since the queen’s army came looking for us at the farm, I feel like maybe, just maybe, we can stop running, and I look up at Hudson with hope shining in my eyes. He hands me a flaky purple roll he’s bought from a food vendor, and I immediately take a bite of the warm pastry, close my eyes, and groan. It’s amazing.
When I flutter my lashes open again, Hudson is staring at me strangely, but in a blink, the look is gone and he’s turning us to walk down another street filled with vendors.
Smokey is super excited by all the people as well, and she’s having a blast weaving in and out of the foot traffic. But the third time she almost gets stepped on, Hudson calls her back, and she winds herself around his neck so she can still have a good view of all the happenings.
We didn’t have any plan when we set out except to learn the lay of the land, so we just kind of wander up and down the streets for a couple of hours. Some of the locals do give us second—and even third—looks, but everyone seems incredibly friendly.
After wandering some of the side streets, we make it back to the huge town square at the center of Adarie. The inn where we’re staying is all the way at one end, but the area is so big that there’s a lot between us and the hotel. Including a giant park right in the center of the square, complete with a gazebo and a wishing well filled with iridescent purple coins.
I’ve always been a sucker for wishing wells. When I was little, my dad used to take me to the big fountain in Balboa Park at least once a month so I could throw a penny in. I haven’t done it in forever, haven’t even thought about it since my parents died, but now that I’m standing here, all I want is to toss a coin in and make a wish.
Too bad I don’t know what that wish would be.
Maybe that we find a way to settle in here. A way to be safe and secure and build a life in this world that’s so different from our own.
But I don’t make a wish.
Instead, we cut through the park to one of the ornate purple park benches that are peppered throughout the violet grass. Someone is setting up sound equipment in the center of the gazebo—probably for the auditions—and I wonder what time the troubadours are supposed to go on.
