“Yeah, but—” I break off, unsure of how much to tell him. He’s fun and super kind, but we literally just met. I don’t know what’s the right balance of information to give them.

“We’ve actually got a present for the manager,” Hudson says smoothly. “He’s related to friends of ours.”

“Well, isn’t that fortuitous?” Caoimhe says with a wink. “You go do that, and we’ll find a good spot to set up and earn some quick change. If you’re looking for us later, just follow the music—and find the biggest crowd. That will be us.”

“We’ll find you,” I promise her, then give the troubadours a little wave before Hudson and I head across the street. “Is it wrong that I really like them?” I ask him as soon as we’re out of earshot.

Sure, Caoimhe’s leers at Hudson were a little much to take at first, but along the three-mile journey into Adarie, it became apparent she meant nothing by it. She has the kind of confidence that just oozes sex appeal, whether she turns it up or not. Besides, she eventually took the hint and stopped hitting on Hudson—which was neither here nor there to me, of course.

“I like them, too,” he answers with a small grin. “Just not sure we can trust them. Or Maroly and Arnst, for that matter. I’d avoid her cousin’s inn altogether if there was anywhere else to stay.”

“Totally,” I tell him with a roll of my eyes. “No one is ever that nice without a reason. Can’t even be remotely trusted. Not even if they told me today was Saturday.”

“Well, definitely don’t trust them then,” he drawls. “Considering it’s Sunday.”

“It is? I thought—” I break off, go over the days in my head. “How did I miss a day?”

“You didn’t. I was just fucking with you.”

“You know what? Some days I don’t even like you,” I say, mock glaring at him as he pulls the inn’s front door open for me.

“Yeah you do,” he shoots back.

I grin, because he’s right. Despite everything, I do like him. A lot. No need to let him know that, though. “I tolerate you,” I tell him with a sniff. “It’s not the same thing.”

“Tolerate, okay.” He nods. “I’ll remember that the next time you crawl all over me in the middle of the night.”

“That happened once!”

“Once a night, maybe.” His grin is wicked.

“Seriously?” I mock glare at him again. “You think this is the time to bring that up?”

“What better time?” he asks, brows raised. “We seem to have called a truce. Why shouldn’t I take advantage of it?”

Before I can answer him, the harried-looking man at the front desk says, “Can I help you?”

“Actually, yes,” I say. “We were hoping to—”
