What I really found interesting, though, is that Caoihme insisted she’s met tons of otherworlders like us, and she’s never heard of the queen’s army hunting them to put them to death. Orebon was telling the truth, the queen is desperate to find a way back to our world, but Caoihme claimed she also knows that just because someone made it through the barrier doesn’t always mean they know how to get back.

Which leads me to believe…the army that came to Arnst’s farm was after us specifically. Why?

I make a mental note to talk to Hudson about it later. Our more immediate problem is finding the mayor and requesting sanctuary as well as securing lodging. The idea of a bed makes me a little dizzy with excitement.

As we walk along the cobblestone streets, I can’t help but be charmed by the fancy village square, elaborate architecture, and miles upon miles of homes and other buildings.

The streets are still fairly empty for early morning, and I can only imagine how even more amazing this town will seem bustling with people, shop doors open and patio restaurants teeming with hungry guests.

I’m struck by the absolute beauty of this place. Old-world shops, planter boxes overflowing with flowers, winding cobblestone streets. And I kind of fall in love with all of it.

A glance at Hudson tells me he’s enjoying this walk as much as I am. Even Smokey is getting in on the action. She’s actually unwound herself from her seemingly permanent spot around one of Hudson’s limbs and is racing through the streets, tumbling over and around herself with excitement. Apparently, she knows exactly what this place is and definitely approves.

“There’s the inn,” Hudson says, nodding to a building at the edge of the town square. Tall and wide, it looks like what would happen if an old German town and The Nightmare Before Christmas had a giant purple baby.

The architecture is all old German Bauhaus with its dark half timbering against a light background and a pointy roof. But at the same time, it has narrow towers sticking out at odd angles and looks just a little bit off-kilter. Yeah, there’s definitely a little Jack Skellington in there whether it was intended or not.

“So should we check in before the auditions?” I ask. “Or try to find the mayor first?”

“Probably get settled first,” Hudson says as he fishes the letter from Maroly and Arnst out of the bottom of the backpack. “Before things get too wild around here.”

“There’s no way they’ll have an open room,” Lumi tells us. “Probably completely booked up for the auditions tonight. People come from all over to preview the entertainment.”
