“Troubadours.” Hudson repeats what Orebon had called themselves earlier, and he sounds a lot more skeptical than I feel.

“That’s right.” Orebon smiles at Hudson, then turns to me. “Why did you think we might be an army after you?”

Hudson narrows his eyes but answers, “We heard the Shadow Queen is looking for people from our world.”

“Yeah, we’ve occasionally heard the same.” Orebon pauses, as though he’s not sure how much to say. He must finally decide we deserve to know why we’re being hunted, because he shakes his head and continues. “The queen’s sister was poisoned when she was a child by a human who crossed through the barrier, and therefore she believes her sister’s cure lies in the human realm—or revenge.”

My eyes widen, and a glance at Hudson shows he’s as surprised by that information as I am. I’m not saying I have any intention of surrendering anytime soon, but I can’t lie and say I don’t feel some sympathy for her.

“But don’t worry. As much as we sympathize with Queen Clio, we’ve never been big fans of everyone paying for the deeds of one. Or big fans of the queen’s army.” Lumi adjusts the baby slightly in her carrier, and as he does, I note he’s got a giant case draped over his shoulder. One that looks like it belongs to a musical instrument.

“So are you on the run from the police, too?” I ask.

“Oh, no,” Orebon says, then winks at me. “We’re headed to a town not too far from here.”

“Are you going to Adarie?” I ask, my heart beating faster at the possibility they might know how to get through those giant gates, might have some clue of the reception we could receive.

“Why?” Caoimhe gives Orebon a sly look, so quick I’m doubting I actually saw it, when she turns back to Hudson and asks, “Are you heading to the gates of Adarie?”

“Does it matter where we’re going?” Hudson asks in the mild tone he uses when he’s getting ready to lay a trap. Having been the victim of it numerous times in the lair, I’ll admit it’s got the power to make me shiver a little even when it’s not directed at me.

Caoimhe doesn’t pay him any mind. Instead, she just says, “Of course you’re going to Adarie.”

I guess it’s not much of a leap. We are standing on a mountain overlooking the town below. Besides, surely others know this place is a safe haven for those, like us, who are trying to escape notice by the queen’s army.
