Hudson turns to look at me with a “what the fuck” expression, and I wince, biting my lip. Ugh. Sometimes I forget he missed out on all the children’s bedtime stories most kids are told growing up.
“Doesn’t matter.” I rush to change the subject. “What if we—”
“Why do you do that?” Hudson interrupts.
I blink up at him. “Do what?”
“Assume I need or even want your pity?” His lips thin.
I lean back and slam my hands on my hips. “What the hell does that mean?” I feel a lot of things for Hudson Vega, anger rising to the top of the list at the moment, but the last thing I feel for him is pity.
“You know exactly what it means, Grace,” he snaps. “Every time you think you’ve said something that might remind me I drew the short fucking straw in life, your eyes soften like you’re about to cry. Just fooking stop, will ya?”
His accent is so thick, I can’t help it. I smile. The first smile I’ve felt since last night.
Which only seems to ratchet Hudson’s anger even more if the muttered curse words rolling off his tongue are any indication. I can tell he’s building a full head of steam, gearing up for an epic fight over my supposed pity stares, and I almost take him up on it. Fighting with Hudson would be infinitely more bearable than his politeness.
But I don’t really want to fight right now.
I want to dance. I want to twirl and shout to the heavens that Hudson Vega still cares what I think of him. He cares a lot, if that fook was any indication.
So before he starts yelling at me again about what he thinks I may or may not feel about his shite childhood, I do what I’ve been afraid he’d never let me do again.
I take a step toward him, then another, until I can press my trembling body flush against his hard edges. He goes completely still. I’m pretty sure he even stops breathing.
But that’s okay. I don’t mind coming to him this time. I am the one who hurt him, after all.
So I take a deep breath, let my curves fill up the tiny cracks and crevices between us, let my softness ease past the rocky perimeter of his pain.
As I do, he finally takes that breath. And that’s all I need to do what I’ve been wanting to do all day. I grab onto him, wrap my arms around his waist until my fingertips touch. And squeeze until his earlier distance is just an uncomfortable memory.
Still, I wait for him to bolt, for the skittishness I’ve seen all day to rear its ugly head.
It doesn’t happen.
