Only Hudson could turn twenty miles into an eight-hour adventure that has my teeth still rattling.
Granted, I understand he’s kept up a zigzagging pattern to ensure we aren’t being followed or tracked, but still—I’m about ready to pass out.
As Hudson crests the last mountain, a giant valley unfolds before us, complete with a thriving town at its base. Thank God. Adarie.
He must see it, too, because he slows to a stop and eases my feet back to the ground. I wobble a little, and he doesn’t hesitate to reach out to steady me. I glance at his hand resting on my shoulder and sigh. I suddenly want to step closer, snake my arms around his waist, and lean into his strength and heat. Into his touch.
All day, I’ve missed our old intimacy. Hell, I’ve missed Hudson. He checked out after our discussion about Jaxon last night, and even though he’s talking to me again, that friendship—that intimacy—between us is long gone.
If I had any doubt he didn’t intend to freeze me out, that hope evaporates the minute he realizes I’ve noticed his hand still on my shoulder and he pulls away, then puts several feet between us for good measure as he pretends to study the community below.
Like nearly everything else in Noromar, the town is purple. Purple streets, purple houses, purple grass, purple people.
And while the farm—and the mountains we just went over—filled me in on what to expect, it’s still hard to believe that this much purple exists in the world. Especially considering our clothes are every color but purple. It’s like there was so much purple here, the people had to rebel with their clothing options. I can understand that.
I make a mental note to ask someone in town how they dye their clothes other colors, given all the plants appear to be purple. Curiosity has me turning back to Hudson to ask if he has any idea, but something in the slant of his brows has the words dying in my throat.
“I guess they really don’t like strangers here,” he says.
My eyes follow his line of sight and then widen.
There’s a giant—and by giant I mean freaking huge—wall surrounding the entire town, at least twenty feet tall and four feet thick. I don’t know how I didn’t see it right away.
Probably because you were too busy mooning over Hudson, I remind myself.
I lift my chin and squint against the glaring sun, my gaze running along the edges of the wall. Eventually, I find what I was looking for and point to a faint road I can just make out in the distance leading to a pair of enormous purple gates. “Maybe we just need to say, ‘Open Sesame,’” I joke.
