He’s changed his clothes back to the jeans and shirt I washed in the stream yesterday, but they still look a little damp. The shirt clings to his biceps and back muscles in all the right places.

Not that I’m looking, of course, but when someone looks like Hudson, it’s pretty hard to miss.

“What time is it?” I ask as I roll to my feet, keenly aware that he hasn’t said good morning to me yet like he usually does.

He glances at his watch but not at me. “One o’clock.”

“In the afternoon?” How could I have slept nearly twelve hours? I never sleep that long.

“Yeah.” He draws something on the ground for Smokey. My guess is an X or an O.

“What time—” My voice breaks as the tension of last night and the discomfort of this morning—this afternoon—catches up to me.

“We should be good to leave around six or seven,” he answers, and there’s no rancor in his voice. No sign at all that there are any hard feelings after our conversation before bed.

But he still hasn’t looked at me. And there’s no warmth to anything he’s said, either. I miss it. Which is ridiculous, considering I never even noticed it was there until it was gone.

“Who’s winning?” I ask as I approach the fire and realize, yes, they really are playing tic-tac-toe again. “Or dare I ask?”

“Smokey’s up five games.”

“Is that total or just for today?” I tease.

“Does it matter?” Hudson responds, still without looking up from the game board.

His tone is completely polite, but it still feels like a slap. I don’t think that’s what he intended, but like he just asked me, does that actually matter when I feel like I’m reeling?

“I’m going to go change,” I announce stiffly as I grab my clothes from where they’ve been drying before I dash outside.

I did this, I admit as I struggle to pull on my still-damp jeans. I’d said I wanted to be honest with him—but I wasn’t entirely honest. I couldn’t be.

I shrug on a T-shirt and slide my feet into my shoes, muttering under my breath about obstinate men. I do still love Jaxon. And I know in my soul I always will. Loving him is easy, has always been easy.

I don’t know what I’m starting to feel for Hudson—but I know it’s not simple.

It’s wild and unpredictable and messy—and scary as fuck.

And I’m not ready to face that yet. Is that a crime?

So I said what I said and apparently broke whatever had been growing between us. I didn’t mean to, but that doesn’t matter, either. All that matters is I hurt him when that’s the last thing I wanted to do.
