I roll onto my side, prop my head on my hand, and hold her gaze. I don’t say anything, though. I don’t need to. We both know why she’s acting like a brat.
Eventually her shoulders slump, the fight easing out of her as quickly as it came. “It means of course I’m sorry about the journals. It was a shit thing to do on my part, and I’d like to say I wish I hadn’t done it. But that isn’t true, because reading those journals is the only way I got to see the person you work so hard to keep hidden from the rest of the world. The person Smokey is crazy about, and the person I’m—” She breaks off.
But it’s too late. I heard the hesitation in her voice, along with something else. Something that’s got my palms going sweaty and my heart beating way too fast. “You’re what?” I ask, voice hoarse and maybe even a little needy.
“The person I’m starting to think of as a very good friend.”
Everything inside me deflates at her words, every hope I didn’t even know I had dissolving in an instant. “Yeah,” I tell her. “Me too.”
Then I turn over until my back is to her. “I think I’m going to go to sleep now.”
“Oh, okay. Good night.” She sounds a little forlorn, a little lost. But I don’t have it in me to comfort her tonight. Not when I’m feeling the need for a little comfort myself. Comfort I’m smart enough to know is never going to come—not from her and not from anybody else.
Grace sits motionless for a few more minutes before getting up to check the fire and pour the newly boiled and cooled water into our empty water bottles.
She looks at me several times as she works, but I’m an expert at pretending to be asleep—I’ve had nearly two hundred years to perfect the technique, after all. But when she slips outside for a couple of minutes, it takes every ounce of self-control I have not to move to the mouth of the cave to watch for her, just to make sure she’s okay.
Not that there’s a lot I can do for her if she isn’t. One step outside in this sun, and I’ll fry to a crisp.
Still, I don’t take a deep breath until she’s back in the cave. Not that I let her know that.
Eventually Grace comes to bed, and she, too, lays on her side so that her back is to me.
Minutes tick by with neither of us saying anything to the other. I assume she thinks I’m asleep, but I know that she’s not. I can hear it in her breathing—and in the too-rapid beat of her heart.
