“Extremely shitty, yeah,” I agree. Because it was. And because I’m sick of being the bad guy in every situation.
“But how else was I going to find out the truth about you? It’s not like you’re exactly forthcoming.”
“It’s not like you gave me a reason to be forthcoming,” I answer, stretching out on the blanket like I don’t care about anything—especially this conversation. “You were too busy accusing me of every abomination in the book.”
“To be fair, your ex-girlfriend had just tried to human sacrifice me in a deranged plot to bring you back from the dead.” She rolls her eyes. “Forgive me for needing a little time to get over that.”
“You’re really obsessed with this human-sacrifice thing, aren’t you?” I ask, just to poke at her.
“Excuse me?” Her eyebrows hit her hairline.
I hold up my palms in a “don’t shoot the messenger” move. “All I’m saying is you’ve brought it up several times.”
“Excuse me?” This time her voice is about three octaves higher than normal. “You try having your ass strapped to an altar and see how well you like it.”
“Is that an offer?”
“Keep asking questions like that and it might be,” she retorts.
I’m not sure why I felt the need to poke at her the way I did. Well, except maybe I regretted telling her that reading my journals bothered me. When you’ve spent your entire life never showing anyone weakness for fear they’d use it against you, it’s hard not to feel queasy the first time you let your guard down.
She doesn’t say anything as we stare at the flickering fire, and neither do I. But eventually the silence gets to me, and I say what I should have said a long time ago. “I’m sorry for looking at your memories without your permission.”
She shrugs but still doesn’t say anything.
Now it’s my turn to be annoyed. “Seriously? You’ve got nothing to say to that?”
She shrugs again. Then answers, “Thank you for apologizing?” in the snidest tone imaginable.
“Yeah. That’s what I was looking for.” It’s my turn to roll my eyes. This girl is tough as nails when she wants to be. Normally, I respect the hell out of her for it, but right now it’s just pissing me off.
“Typical Hudson,” she says with a huff. “You can dish it out, but you can’t take it.”
“What’s that supposed to mean? I’m literally apologizing here—”
I break off. I don’t need this, don’t deserve this. Wherever I thought this conversation was going when I asked about her favorite memory, it wasn’t a fight.
But then, that’s where Grace goes when she’s uncomfortable, isn’t it?
