“It’s not in here.” If something was screeching like that in this cave, with these acoustics, I’m fairly certain Hudson and I would both have ruptured eardrums by now. As it is, we’re just really, really uncomfortable. “Is something dying out there?”

“Surely no dying animal could make that much noise,” he answers as he heads for the entrance to the cave.

I’m right behind him. If it is a wounded animal, maybe I can help. When he was alive, rescuing hurt animals was kind of a specialty of my dad’s. No matter how badly hurt they were, he always found a way to nurse them back to health. I don’t have his touch, but I did learn some things from him.

Except when we get there, it’s to find that the noise is definitely not coming from a dying animal. In fact, it’s not coming from an animal at all.

“Smokey!” Hudson exclaims.

The little shadow whirls around and runs straight into his arms.

“How did you get here?” he asks, and I have no idea if she understands him or not. But she goes off on an unintelligible rant that includes waving, jumping, and a whole lot more screeching.

“So?” I ask when she finally winds down. “How’d she get here?”

Hudson gives me a bemused look. “I can’t understand her, either, you know. But my best guess is she followed my scent and then lost it when she got to the cave.”

“Which is why she freaked out,” I finish. “Because she thought she’d lost her precious.”

“Hey, it’s not my fault I’m lovable.” He gives me his most charming grin—one that showcases that damn dimple perfectly.

“It’s not your fault you’ve got a dent in your face, either,” I answer with a shrug. “But you can still be blamed for it.”

“Only by you.”

“Is there somebody else here I should know about?” I lift a brow.

“Smokey’s here,” Hudson shoots back. “And she likes my dent. I mean, my dimple.”

“I win.” I walk closer to Hudson, but not too close, because the last thing I want to do right now is set Smokey off. “What are you going to do with her?”

Apparently, the wide berth I gave them isn’t enough, because Smokey turns around and hisses at me.

“Bite me,” I tell her with a roll of my eyes.

“What do you think I’m going to do with her?” Hudson says. “She’s coming with us.”

“To Adarie?” I ask. “Seriously?”

“What else am I supposed to do?” He looks offended. “Leave her here?”

I want to say yes, but if I’m honest, that’s just because I hate that she hates me. And also fear that she might really bite me one day, if that’s a thing that shadows do.
