He could have made things a lot easier for himself by ditching me anytime in the last several hours. Instead, here he is, saving us both—even if it kills him. He can say he’s fine all he wants, but I can tell this is costing him more than he’ll ever admit.
“When we get to the top of this cliff,” Hudson grinds out as he pulls us up another several feet, “I’m going to need another break.”
Finally. “I was actually going to suggest we stop for the night soon.”
I wait for him to argue—I know he doesn’t want to stop any sooner than we have to. He doesn’t argue, though. In fact, he doesn’t say a word—which tells me he’s in much worse shape than he’s letting on.
Then again, anyone would be tired after the day we had. Despite the sun beating solidly overhead, it’s almost ten o’clock at night. We were up working the farm at six this morning, even before we went on the run for our lives. Is it any wonder we’re both exhausted?
I glance up to the top of the rock wall we’re currently in the middle of scaling. We’re about thirty feet from the top, which means about five more minutes if Hudson stays on the pace he’s been setting. And if there are decent handholds. And if we don’t plummet to our deaths at any second.
The list of uncertainties is long when you’re hanging on the side of a mountain. And I’m hanging on the back of a guy hanging on the side of a mountain. But I’m just really glad I’m not doing it alone. And also that Hudson is the one I’m doing this with. He may have a big mouth, but he’s also got an air of steady confidence that makes me feel like even this nightmare is doable.
Five minutes later—on the dot—we reach the top of the cliff wall. Once there, I try to ignore the fact that there’s another, bigger wall right in front of us. That’s tomorrow’s problem. Tonight’s is finding some kind of shelter/protection so we’re not sitting ducks out here if the Shadow Queen’s soldiers actually spot us.
Oh, and finding water, because that’s going to be a thing soon.
If possible, Hudson looks even more wiped than earlier, so I reach into the pack and toss him one of the few remaining bottles of water as he rests against the rock wall, then settle myself on the ground to inventory exactly what Arnst put in the backpack for us.
