And as much as I want to stay mad at him, I can’t, because I remember exactly how the conversation started this morning about chores… With me having a panic attack that this was our last day on the farm. Arnst had said he’d seen a dust cloud to the southwest, which meant the queen’s army would be far enough away by tomorrow morning, and we had to try to get to Adarie before anyone could discover—and kill—us.

“You are such a jerk,” I mutter without any heat.

Out of nowhere, a loud, low growl fills the clearing. It has the hair standing up on the back of my head as I look around for some heretofore-unseen wild purple animal.

But Hudson just laughs and pats his back. “It’s okay, Smokey. Grace doesn’t mean to be so cruel. It’s just who she is.”

Of course. It’s the freaking shadow. I haven’t actually done anything to her, but somehow she hates me more every minute that passes. Or maybe it’s just that she loves Hudson more, and since the two of us are usually trading insults, she hates me on general principle.

Either way, it’s no fun to be hated by something that loves everyone else so much.

“Does she seriously have to go with you everywhere?” I groan.

“She is my shadow,” he answers with a shrug.

And I can’t help it. I burst out laughing, which is exactly what he wanted, if his self-satisfied smile is anything to go by.

“Maroly packed a lunch for you,” Hudson says, dropping a small picnic basket between us. “I tried to tell her we’d barely worked and didn’t need a break, but she wouldn’t stand for it.”

“Speak for yourself,” I say with a toss of my head. “I spent the whole morning covered in tago milk. It’s not a great smell, I have to say. I’m pretty sure it’s in my pores.”

Hudson leans forward, pretends to take a deep whiff. As he does, Smokey hisses at me in warning, but I ignore her. My new plan for dealing with Hudson’s pet is to just pretend she doesn’t exist when she does something obnoxious to me—which is pretty much every minute of every day.

“You’re right,” he says after a few seconds. “There’s a definite stench.”

“Wow.” I toss him a half-amused, half-insulted look. “Thanks.”

He pulls several food items out of the basket as well as two bottles of water, then offers me a sandwich. He blinks at me with his full boyish charm turned up to eleven. “Truce?”

“Oh, there will be no truce, Vega. No surrender.” I narrow my eyes, make my voice as scary as I can manage. “Only vengeance. And death.”

“Death? Really? Doesn’t that seem a little extreme—”
