I wanted to argue that point, too, but the truth is, she’s right. Our world is very unforgiving in so many ways—ways that have nothing to do with magic and everything to do with pain.
But just because she’s right about that doesn’t mean she’s right about everything. Because I don’t have any magic, and I definitely don’t have any power. I’m pretty sure I would have noticed by now.
My mind flicks back to the dragon attacking and my somehow making both Hudson and me fireproof, but I shake my head. There’s probably a very good reason that happened. I don’t know what, but I’m sure there’s a simple explanation.
Because it’s not like any of my friends could hide their magic, even if they wanted to. So how could I possibly hide mine?
As if to prove my point, Hudson fades across the meadow straight to where I am taking a break from milking beneath a grouping of tall willowy trees with leaves the size of chairs fanning out around their thin trunks. He covers three hundred yards in the time it takes me to exhale the breath I took when I first saw him.
Yeah, it’s definitely hard to hide that kind of speed.
“I figured I’d find you here,” he says, plopping down on the ground next to me and leaning against the huge, gnarly tree trunk. “Shirking your duties.”
I start to tell him to bite me, but that went so well last time that I bite my tongue at the last minute. And flip him off instead.
“Is that an invitation?” he asks, brows raised.
“For you to fuck yourself?” I shoot back. “Why, yes. Yes, it is.”
“Wow. Not pulling any punches today, huh, Grace? I’m wounded.” He gives me his most angelic look. The one that usually has me shaking with trepidation at what he’s done now, but he’s already screwed me over today.
“If I were you, I’d be very, very worried about falling asleep tonight,” I answer, reaching down to wring milk from my T-shirt.
“Hey”—he holds both hands out in mock innocence—“you were the one who made fun of me last night for saying vampires were not cut out to be dairy farmers.”
I roll my eyes at him. Hard. “That didn’t mean I wanted to be volunteered for udder duty this morning.”
He chuckles, his eyes crinkling at the corners with mischief. “What can I say? I’m a card-carrying feminist, and I would never want to suggest you couldn’t do a better job than a man.”
He is ridiculous.
