Because apparently after a night of cuddling, I’m that bloody gullible. But it’s hard not to be when I can still remember what she feels like pressed against me. And how good it is to wake up warm and comfortable and not alone, next to someone who smells and feels as good as Grace does.

And if that doesn’t make me the most gullible ass in the world, I don’t know what does.

But just because I fell for her tricks doesn’t mean she needs to know that. Which is why I look her straight in the eyes and call her bluff. “Actually, I’d love a lesson on legumes. In fact—”

I break off as a sudden, heart-wrenching wail fills the air. It’s the kind of cry that stops your pulse, has shivers running up and down your spine, and makes you cringe all at the same time.

“What on earth is—” Grace breaks off as our eyes meet and realization dawns.

“Smokey,” we both say at the same time.

Grace takes a minute to clean up her breakfast bowl and grab a couple of bottles of water, but I head straight for the front porch. No one should have to sound like that poor thing sounds right now.

As soon as I open the front door, Smokey rushes me. She slams into me so hard, I have to throw a hand out to keep my balance, then she spins around and between my legs like a cat. If that cat was twenty kilos of solid muscle and on crystal meth.

Her crying has stopped, thankfully, but as I bend down to pet her, she lets out a yowl that splits the air around us.

“I’m sorry!” I yank my hand back immediately. “Do you not want to be petted? I won’t if you—”

She hops up then, bouncing her head against the underside of my hand.

“I’m not sure what that means,” I tell her.

Smokey yowls again, then hops straight up and onto my still-outstretched hand.

“She wants you to pet her, silly,” Grace tells me as she comes through the door.

“I tried that, but she made the most pitiful sound ever.” Still, I gingerly place a hand on the top of her…head? blob? and try again.

This time, the yowl she lets out sounds a lot happier than the last one.

“See?” Grace says with a laugh. “I told you that’s what she wanted.” She reaches a hand out to pet Smokey, too.

But the second Grace’s fingers come in contact with the shadow, Smokey hisses like a snake and strikes out at her. Grace immediately jumps back, out of striking zone, but we both look at the sweet little shadow in bewilderment.

“Hey, what was that?” Grace asks.
