As if on cue, Grace’s stomach growls. Her cheeks turn a familiar shade of pink, but I don’t know why she’s embarrassed. Hunger is normal, especially considering she hasn’t eaten all day. Add in the amount of walking/running/fighting we did, and I’m surprised she isn’t ready to gnaw on the first edible thing she comes across.

I know I am.

But since Grace is my only option here, I shove that thought down deep. No way am I drinking from her right now. Not when we’ve finally managed to go a few hours without her looking at me like I’m a cross between a puppy killer and a monster.

“That sounds amazing,” Grace answers with a sweet smile I’ve never once seen aimed my way. Of course, I’d probably keel over from shock if she did.

Grace slips down the hall to clean up, and then I do the same. Part of me wants to dive into the shower first, given I’m not going to eat. But I have several questions I need answered from Maroly and Arnst, and this seems like the best time to get those.

So I satisfy myself with taking off my shirt and washing the grime and grit from our long day slogging through dirt off my hands, face, and torso. After a quick dry with a fresh towel Maroly handed me, I head back to the dining room, where everyone is already gathered around the large, round table.

There’s an empty spot between Grace and Tiola, so I slide into it with a smile at the little girl. She smiles back, her sharp teeth gleaming in the light cast by the chandelier that appears to be lit by glowing crystals above us.

“So,” Maroly says as she pours ice water into the glass in front of me. “Tell us where you two came from. There’s nothing around for miles, and it doesn’t look like you have a carriage or other ride.” She smiles encouragingly, revealing teeth that are somehow even sharper looking than her daughter’s.

“We don’t actually know,” Grace answers as she spoons what looks like stir-fried vegetables onto her plate. Purple stir-fried vegetables. “We were running from a dragon—”

“A dragon?” Tiola bounces up and down on her chair. “A real dragon? I’ve never seen one of those!”

“He was definitely a real dragon,” Grace tells her. “He spit fire and everything.”

Arnst doesn’t look skeptical so much as shocked when he comments, “You’re saying a dragon chased you into Noromar? That doesn’t make sense. We don’t have any dragons.”

“None of this makes sense.” I take a drink of water, grateful that it seems to be the same here even if everything else is different. Then what he said sinks in. “Wait a minute. Did you say we’re in Noromar?”
